What studies tell us about fuller beard growth
What studies tell us about fuller beard growth
Most products care for the beard you already have. But what happens when you focus on the follicle instead?
We looked at Capilia Longa™, the study behind it, and what actually happened after 150 days.
Most beard products work on the hair. Not the follicle.
Beard oils, balms and conditioning serums all do roughly the same job. They soften the hair you already have, calm the skin underneath it, and make an existing beard look and feel healthier.
There is nothing wrong with that. It is simply a different job from the one most men with patchy or slow-growing areas are actually trying to solve.
If the goal is a fuller-looking beard, and not just a softer one, it makes sense to look further than the surface. Beard hair does not begin at the skin. It begins at the follicle beneath it.
That is the distinction this article is about. It is the reason we started looking at ingredients built for the follicle, rather than the hair.
The ingredient that made us look below the surface
Capilia Longa™ is a natural active ingredient developed by Vytrus Biotech, a biotechnology company outside Barcelona. It is produced using cultured cells from the Curcuma longa plant, the same plant more commonly known as turmeric.
What caught our attention was not a bold claim on a label. It was the approach behind it. Instead of extracting an ingredient directly from a harvested plant, Vytrus cultures the plant's cells in a controlled lab environment. The result is a concentrated, consistent active: the same ingredient, produced the same way, batch after batch.
That kind of consistency is unusual in an industry built on essential oils and botanical blends that can vary from one harvest to the next.
It raised the obvious next question, and it is the one we imagine you are asking too.
Interesting. But does it actually work?
What happened after 150 days
150 days · 20 men
Rather than rely on the ingredient's own literature, we had the complete routine built around Capilia Longa™ evaluated independently. The study was conducted by J.S. Hamilton and ran for 150 days, with 20 men who had areas of reduced beard growth.
Hair density and thickness were measured in the same facial areas at the start of the study, and again after 30, 90 and 150 days.
After 150 days of consistent use:
These are measured study results, not customer survey responses or marketing projections.
What these numbers do, and don't, mean
150 days is a long study for a cosmetic routine, and 20 men is a modest sample. We think both facts are worth stating plainly rather than glossing over.
Individual results vary, because genetics largely determine how many follicles in a given area are capable of producing facial hair in the first place. A study can measure what happened, on average, for the men who took part. It cannot promise the same outcome for every reader.
We would rather tell you that upfront than let a headline percentage do the talking on its own.
Why the follicle matters
Hair growth does not begin at the surface. It begins at the follicle beneath it, and each follicle moves through a cycle: an active growth phase, a short transitional phase, and a resting phase, before the cycle can begin again. At any given time, follicles in the same area can be at different stages of that cycle.
Capilia Longa™ is the active ingredient at the centre of the routine evaluated in the study above. The study measured beard density and hair thickness directly. What follows is how Vytrus Biotech proposes the ingredient supports the follicle, which we are describing separately from what the study itself measured.
That is a meaningfully different job from softening hair that has already grown. It is also a more modest one than it might sound. Supporting a follicle's activity is not the same as creating a follicle that was never there. Genetics determine how many follicles exist and where. An active ingredient works within that, not around it.
We think that distinction matters more than most marketing gives it credit for.
Hair growth does not begin at the surface.
It begins at the follicle beneath it.
An active phase. A resting phase. Then the cycle begins again.
How Copenhagen Grooming ended up working with it
Back in 2015, before any of this had a name, I was reading through an online community where men were trading questionable advice about patchy beard growth. What struck me was the actual question underneath it. Nobody was asking how to make their existing beard hair softer or shinier. They wanted to know if the sparse patches on their cheeks could look different.
The products on the market at the time had long ingredient lists and confident claims, and very little to back either up. I wanted something with a clearer reason to be there: an active ingredient, not another oil.
That search eventually led to Vytrus Biotech and Capilia Longa™. Finding the ingredient was one step. Understanding it was another, which is why I went to see the laboratory near Barcelona in person, and worked with the team behind it directly.
Copenhagen Grooming was founded in 2017, and the original Beard Growth Kit, built around this ingredient, launched internationally the following year.
How we built a routine around the ingredient
An active ingredient is only useful if it is applied consistently. So rather than adding more products for the sake of it, we built the routine around three simple jobs.
-
01 · Apply
The Beard Activator delivers Capilia Longa™ to the skin every day, alongside Biotin and Arginine. -
02 · Roll
The Beard Roller is used at regular intervals as the microneedling step in the routine. It is a supporting step, not the main event. -
03 · Clean
The Cleanser keeps the Beard Roller hygienic between uses, so the routine can be followed consistently over time.
Put together, these three steps are what we now sell as the Beard Growth Kit. The routine came first. The kit is simply the way we package it, so the three steps arrive together instead of as a pile of separate decisions.
What consistent use looks like in the real world
The study measured 20 men under controlled conditions. Here is what consistent use has looked like for several of the men who have followed the routine on their own.

"I have a bald spot on my chin and upper neck I wanted to deal with. I can already see new hairs coming in that weren't visible before."

"I was very sceptical at first, so I took pictures every month, and they proved that I was the one who was wrong. The product worked exactly as advertised."

"These products have helped my beard's thickness and patchiness more than I expected."

"If there's any advice I'd give: stay consistent. That's what changed things for me, more than anything else."

"I have been using this for about 10 months now, and how much my beard comes in is ridiculous."
Individual results and timelines vary. These are real customers describing their own experience, not guaranteed outcomes.
What beard growth products can't change
We would rather end with this than bury it, because it is the part most advertising leaves out.
Genetics play a significant role in beard growth. They determine how many follicles you have in a given area, and how many of them are capable of producing visible facial hair at all. No active ingredient, however well studied, can create a follicle where none exists.
Results vary between individuals, and even between areas of the same face. Some patches respond more visibly than others. Consistency across the full 150 days matters more than the amount used on any single day.
This routine is not a way to guarantee a completely different, genetically determined beard pattern. It is a way to support the follicles you already have, applied consistently, and measured honestly.
Why we give you 150 days to test it
The study followed consistent use for 150 days and measured participants at multiple points along the way. We use the same 150-day period as the benchmark for evaluating the routine rather than promising what should happen after only a few weeks.
So instead of asking you to take our word for it, eligible Beard Growth Kits come with a Growth Guarantee. To qualify, you need to purchase an eligible 150-day or 250-day kit, use the routine consistently for at least 150 days, and document your progress with monthly photographs. The guarantee can be claimed once per customer; additional products and orders are not included.
A few things worth knowing
Is this just a beard oil?
No. Traditional beard oils primarily condition the skin and hair you already have. The Beard Activator is a targeted serum built around Capilia Longa™, used as part of a three-step routine developed for areas of reduced growth.
Can it create new follicles?
No cosmetic product can create follicles that don't exist or override your genetics. The routine is designed to support the activity of follicles you already have.
How soon will I see anything?
The study measured outcomes over 150 days. Individual timelines vary, so we recommend tracking progress with monthly photographs rather than judging changes day to day.
Is the Beard Roller safe to use?
Yes, when used as instructed. Don't use more pressure or frequency than recommended, don't use it on irritated or damaged skin, and don't share it with anyone else.
The Beard Growth Kit brings Capilia Longa™, the Beard Activator, the Beard Roller and the Cleanser together: the same routine evaluated over 150 days.
Consistency, not intensity, is what the study measured. If you're ready to find out what 150 days of it looks like for you, the kit includes everything the routine needs, and nothing it doesn't.
